Double the cats trapped in 2025!
Last year we caught 44 adult cats and 28 kittens.
We really stepped up our game this year with new trappers joining in on the fun and starting up the 501(c)3. As of right now we've caught 66 adult cats and 59 kittens.
If you're new to this the kittens generally get socialized and fostered by a local shelter, then adopted into a family. This gets them off the streets and back into families. By law, as well, they also have to be fixed so it ends the reproductive cycle for the cats we trap.
The adults, with trap neuter and release, get immunized and fixed and then released back where they come from in most cases to live out their lives. This protects neighborhood animals from rabies and stops rampant kitten births.
2026
That said, it only works if we keep it up. 2024 was great and 2025 was awesome but we have to keep going. We have to change minds who think this isn't worth doing.
The biggest thing that limits the way we help Ankeny is
- Knowing where cats are
- Having permisson to trap those cats
- Having appointments to trap them with the ARL, Furry Friends, or APE
- Having those appointments paid for
We also can't lose sight of the need to work with the city on common sense updates to the city code that make TNR. That has been difficult to make headway on. If anything, the new leash ordinance has only made things go the other direction.
